With our small groups and time for one-on-one attention, everyone will have the chance to advance their skills in wildlife photography. Whether you are starting at the beginning or looking to enhance your skill set with tips and tricks used by pros, we’ll help you improve your photography skills. (DSLR Camera and Lens Recommended, but not required.)
Learn how to get amazing wildlife shots ranging from galloping gazelles to rushing rhinos, from gentle giraffes to wary wolves. The center is home to a wide variety of species, including many which are endangered or critically endangered. We will have the opportunity to photograph species that you may never see in the wild.
Our outdoor workshops teach basic to advanced techniques on a wide variety of subjects such as:
• Acquiring and tracking moving targets to photograph birds and animals
• Handheld camera techniques • Lighting and environmental considerations
• How to capture your best images in the wild
• Custom options for additional private sessions
• Much more
Our indoor workshops continue with digital darkroom discussions. Learn how to take what you capture in your camera, process it to perfection, and then properly store it so that you avoid the heartbreak of losing your favorite images in this age of digital art.
With small groups of 4-6 people, everyone gets both group and hands-on instruction.

WHY FOSSIL RIM?
Touring their 1,700+ acres is like taking an African Safari in the middle of Texas. The beautiful, rolling hills of the center are home to more than 1,000 animals representing over 50 species, giving us the opportunity to photograph individuals and herds of animals in natural environments. We can even hand-feed their stunning family of giraffes. With open-sided, covered safari vehicles, our small groups will have every opportunity to photograph the animals around us. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is also a not-for-profit 501(c)3 entity specializing in captive breeding programs for indigenous and exotic endangered and threatened species. Their passion for conservation and their love of the animals in their care make them an ideal partner for safari workshops like this.
ACCOMMODATION: FOOTHILL’S SAFARI CAMP AT FOSSIL RIM WILDLIFE CENTER What better way to experience a safari than to sleep in cabins overlooking one of Fossil Rim’s most popular wildlife watering holes where an ever-changing variety of animals can be observed? It’s like stepping into an African game reserve right in the middle of Texas.
Each safari-styled cabin is custom-designed and fitted with two twin beds, fresh linens, electrical power outlets, bathrooms with showers, ceiling fans and central heat and air. All cabins have a front porch with chairs facing the watering hole and adjacent picnic tables. Stroll over to the observation deck and trade stories of the day. Inside the glass-walled pavilion, you can utilize Wi-Fi while you gaze across the adjacent pasture where herds congregate and roam daily. An abundance of brilliant stars and constellations can be seen at night from the dark camp. We recommend bringing a flashlight in case you need to leave your cabin after dark.
Accommodation in this package includes 3 nights based on double occupancy. Requests can be made for single occupancy cabins, which are subject to availability and incur an additional fee.
While we highly recommend the on-site safari camp accommodations included in this package, if you prefer not to stay in the cabins, alternative options are available for an additional cost. Please contact us with your requests, and we will do our best to accommodate.
Daily Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included in the package rate. If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know as soon as possible. We will do all that we can to accommodate. Adult beverages are not included in this package.
The closest airport is Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). The 85-mile drive takes approximately 1.5 hours (90 minutes) from the airport to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. This could be longer during peak traffic. ABOUT OUR PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
A true world traveler, Gary Mc Alea was born in Dublin, Ireland, where he spent his childhood. He then moved to South Africa, where he spent twenty years learning to love nature and animals and developing a love of capturing their incredible moments to share with others. Photography was a way to enhance the colorful stories the Irish can’t help but tell at every turn.
Gary has now lived in Austin, TX, USA for fifteen years. This is where he met his lovely wife, Katheryn, who thankfully shares his love of wildlife and nature. Gary has also travelled in Asia, India, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, finding different animals, locations and events to photograph in each area.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center has become one of Gary’s favorite wildlife photography locations in Texas. The safari camp, landscape, and animals remind him of his years spent living in Africa, and it’s the perfect place for photographing exotic and endangered species in natural settings. He also shares Fossil Rim’s passion for conservation and is happy to share this amazing nonprofit center and its animals with you. Gary’s work with the wonderful staff to capture photos for Fossil Rim has led to the great partnership that enables us to bring this safari package to you.
INCLEMENT WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS
Outdoor workshops are subject to weather and safety considerations. While this center is suitable for many conditions, should the weather become extreme or potentially dangerous, the agenda may be adapted and/or moved temporarily to indoor facilities.
We look forward to seeing you on Safari!
